## ACH vs wire transfer: what is the difference?

**An ACH transfer travels in batches through the ACH Network and mostly settles in one banking day or less, for cents or a capped fee. A wire transfer over the Federal Reserve's Fedwire Funds Service is built for same-day payments and is final once it is credited.** As of September 2026, that is the whole trade. ACH is cheaper and has a return process. A wire is the fast, certain rail for a large one-off payment, and getting it back takes a formal return request. For most small businesses, ACH should carry payroll, vendor bills, and customer payments, and wires should be saved for the purchase where the other side needs cleared money today.

Sourcing note: ACH timing and limits are from nacha.org and the Federal Reserve's frbservices.org, wire hours from frbservices.org, and fees from stripe.com, bill.com, and melio.com, all read September 14, 2026. Your bank's own cutoffs and fees decide what you actually get.

## How ACH and wires move money

**ACH is a batch network; Fedwire is a bank-to-bank funds transfer service run by the Federal Reserve Banks.** When you send ACH, your bank combines your payment instructions with other customers' and sends the file to an ACH Operator. There are two: the Federal Reserve and The Clearing House. The operator sorts the file and routes each payment to the receiving bank or credit union. ACH credits push money out (payroll, vendor payments); ACH debits pull it in (customer autopay).

A wire over Fedwire works differently: the Fedwire Funds Service gives participating banks finality on payments credited to their Federal Reserve Bank master accounts. Once it lands, it is done.

## ACH vs wire transfer at a glance

| | ACH | Wire transfer (Fedwire) |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Speed | Most payments settle in one banking day or less; ACH credits can take up to two banking days; Same Day ACH settles within hours | Same business day during Fedwire hours |
| Cutoffs | Final Same Day ACH deadline at the Fed: 4:45 p.m. ET (your bank's is earlier) | Customer transfers cut off at 6:45 p.m. ET; the service closes at 7:00 p.m. ET |
| Cost | Stripe ACH Direct Debit 0.8%, $5.00 cap; Bill.com $0.59 per ACH; Melio $0.50 per ACH after the free monthly payments | Set by each bank, often charged on both ends; Bill.com international USD wire $19.99 |
| Reversibility | Return and reversal process under the Nacha Rules | Final once credited; a return is a request message (camt.056) |
| Limits | Same Day ACH: $1 million per payment, rising to $10 million on September 17, 2027 | No per-payment cap on the Fedwire pages we read; your bank sets its own limit |
| Best for | Payroll, recurring vendor bills, customer payments | Large one-off purchases where the seller needs cleared funds the same day |

## How long does ACH take?

**Most ACH payments settle in one banking day or less. Nacha, which governs the ACH Network, estimates 80% of all ACH payments, credits and debits, settle in one banking day or less across regular and Same Day ACH.** The detail depends on the direction:

- **ACH credits** can settle the same day, the next banking day, or in two banking days, and the substantial majority settle in one banking day or less.
- **ACH debits** settle the same day or the next banking day. By Nacha Rule, an ACH debit cannot carry a settlement date more than one banking day into the future.
- **Payroll Direct Deposit** for a Friday payday is available in employees' accounts by 9 a.m. that Friday in virtually all cases, per Nacha.

**Same Day ACH** sends and receives ACH debits and credits within hours, on the same business day, and reaches nearly every bank and credit union account in the U.S. It launched for credits in September 2016 and added debits in 2017. At the Fed's FedACH service, same-day files are due by 10:30 a.m., 2:45 p.m., and 4:45 p.m. ET, and same-day settlement posts at 1:00 p.m., 5:00 p.m., and 6:00 p.m. ET. The last deadline, 4:45 p.m. ET, settles at 6:00 p.m. ET.

Those are the Fed's deadlines for banks, not yours. Your bank or payments app sets an earlier cutoff. Bill.com, for example, tells customers to schedule a Pay Faster ACH by 10:00 a.m. PT for same-day ACH and by 6:00 p.m. PT for next-day ACH.

Two more things to know. First, the Same Day ACH limit is $1 million per payment as of September 2026, and FedACH gives any single item over the limit the next business day's settlement date. Nacha has approved a rule raising the limit to $10 million, effective September 17, 2027. Second, Same Day ACH is not a niche product: in the first quarter of 2026 there were 403 million Same Day ACH payments, up 23.6% from a year earlier, worth $1.1 trillion.

## How long does a wire transfer take?

**A Fedwire transfer settles the same business day, as long as it goes in before the cutoff.** Each Fedwire funds-transfer business day begins at 9:00 p.m. ET on the preceding calendar day and ends at 7:00 p.m. ET, which is a 22-hour day. Saturdays, Sundays, and Federal Reserve holidays are not funds-transfer business days. On a Sunday before a Monday business day, Fedwire opens at 9:00 p.m. ET Sunday for Monday's business. The cutoff for customer transfers is 6:45 p.m. ET.

In practice, the limit is your bank. Banks set their own wire cutoffs ahead of the Fed's, and a wire you start on a Saturday waits for the next funds-transfer business day.

## ACH vs wire transfer fees

**Neither network sets the price you pay. Your bank or payments app does, and ACH was the cheaper rail at every provider we checked.** Published prices, read September 14, 2026:

- **Stripe ACH Direct Debit** (collecting from customers): 0.8% per payment, capped at $5.00. The cap is reached at $625, so a $10,000 invoice paid by ACH costs $5. Card rates and every other line item are in our breakdown of [Stripe fees](/blog/stripe-fees).
- **Bill.com** (paying vendors): $0.59 per standard ACH, $11.99 for Pay Faster ACH, and $19.99 for an international USD wire, a fee Bill.com says may be transferred to the receiver. Our [Bill.com review](/blog/bill-com-review) covers the per-user subscription on top.
- **Melio** (paying vendors): 5 free ACH payments a month on the free Go plan, then $0.50 per payment. Paid plans raise the free allowance. The plan-by-plan math is in our [Melio review](/blog/melio-review).
- **Domestic bank wires**: fees vary by bank and are often charged on both ends, once by the sender's bank and again by the receiver's. Pull your bank's fee schedule before you pick wires as a default.

At 40 vendor payments a month, standard ACH on Bill.com is $23.60 in payment fees, and Melio's free plan is $17.50 after the first 5.

## Can you reverse an ACH or a wire?

**ACH has a return process; a wire is final.** ACH debits run on the payer's authorization, and the Nacha Rules include returns and reversals. FedACH settles eligible electronic returns received before its 4:45 p.m. ET deadline the same day. That is why customer autopay runs on ACH: mistakes have a path back.

A wire does not. Fedwire gives participating banks finality once a payment is credited, and to get money back the sending bank sends a camt.056 return request message. That is a request, not an undo button. For a small business, the rule follows: confirm any wire instructions by calling a phone number you already have, never one from the email that sent the instructions.

## Which one should a small business use?

- **Paying vendors: ACH.** Recurring bills, contractors, and suppliers belong on ACH through your bank or an AP tool. It costs cents per payment and mostly settles in one banking day or less.
- **Payroll: ACH Direct Deposit.** A Friday payday is in employees' accounts by 9 a.m. Friday in virtually all cases. If you miss your provider's regular deadline, Same Day ACH is the recovery option before a wire.
- **Large one-off purchases: wire.** Equipment, a property deposit, or a purchase where the seller will not release until funds clear the same day. Wire anything above the $1 million Same Day ACH limit that has to move today.
- **Receiving customer payments: ACH.** For invoices above a few hundred dollars, ACH Direct Debit at 0.8% with a $5.00 cap on Stripe costs far less than a card of the same size. Accept an incoming wire when a customer prefers it for a large deposit, and check what your bank charges to receive it.

## The rail is the easy part: automate the payables

Choosing ACH saves a few dollars per payment. The expensive part of accounts payable is everything before the payment goes out:

- Typing invoice data into your accounting system
- Chasing approvals by email
- Matching bills to purchase orders
- Paying late, or paying twice

Tools like Bill.com and Melio send the ACH once a bill is entered and approved. For the packaged options side by side, see our guide to [invoice automation software](/blog/invoice-automation-software). When invoices are messy or approval rules are specific to your business, we build it: [AI document processing](/solutions/ai-document-processing) that reads, codes, and routes invoices typically runs $8K to $20K over 2 to 4 weeks. Your payments tool stays underneath to send the ACH.

## The bottom line

Use ACH for payroll, vendor bills, and customer payments: most settle in one banking day or less, Same Day ACH settles within hours up to $1 million per payment, and the fee is cents or capped. Use a wire for the large one-off payment that has to be final today, before your bank's wire cutoff. Then count the hours it takes to get each bill ready to pay: that is the real cost.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### What is the difference between ACH and a wire transfer?

As of September 2026, an ACH transfer travels in batches through the ACH Network, which Nacha governs, and Nacha estimates 80% of ACH payments settle in one banking day or less. It costs cents or a capped fee, and it has a return process. A wire over the Federal Reserve's Fedwire Funds Service is built for same-day payments and gives banks finality once a payment is credited, so getting it back takes a return request. Use ACH for routine payments and a wire for large one-off payments that must be final the same day.

### How long does ACH take?

Most ACH payments settle in one banking day or less. Per Nacha, ACH credits can settle the same day, the next banking day, or in two banking days, and ACH debits settle the same day or the next banking day. Same Day ACH settles within hours: at the Fed's FedACH service, same-day files are due by 10:30 a.m., 2:45 p.m., and 4:45 p.m. ET, with settlement at 1:00 p.m., 5:00 p.m., and 6:00 p.m. ET. Your bank sets an earlier cutoff; Bill.com, for example, says to schedule a Pay Faster ACH by 10:00 a.m. PT for same-day delivery.

### Is a wire transfer faster than ACH?

A wire is faster than standard ACH, and it has a later same-day cutoff than Same Day ACH. Fedwire runs from 9:00 p.m. ET the evening before to 7:00 p.m. ET each business day, with a 6:45 p.m. ET cutoff for customer transfers. The Fed's final Same Day ACH deadline is 4:45 p.m. ET, settling at 6:00 p.m. ET, and Same Day ACH is limited to $1 million per payment as of September 2026, rising to $10 million on September 17, 2027. Fedwire does not run on Saturdays, Sundays, or Federal Reserve holidays.

### Which is cheaper, ACH or a wire transfer?

ACH, at every provider we checked on September 14, 2026. Stripe ACH Direct Debit is 0.8% capped at $5.00, Bill.com charges $0.59 per standard ACH, and Melio includes 5 free ACH payments a month on its free Go plan, then $0.50 per payment. Bill.com charges $19.99 for an international USD wire. Domestic bank wire fees vary by bank and are often charged on both ends, so check your bank's fee schedule.

### Can you reverse an ACH payment or a wire transfer?

ACH has a return and reversal process under the Nacha Rules, and ACH debits run on the payer's authorization. FedACH settles eligible electronic returns received before its 4:45 p.m. ET deadline the same day. A wire is final: Fedwire gives banks finality once a payment is credited, and the sending bank has to send a camt.056 return request message to ask for the money back. Confirm wire instructions by calling a phone number you already have before you send.

### Should a small business pay vendors by ACH or wire?

ACH, for almost every vendor bill. It costs cents per payment through tools like Bill.com ($0.59) and Melio ($0.50 after the free monthly payments), and most ACH payments settle in one banking day or less. Save wires for large one-off purchases where the seller needs cleared funds the same day, or amounts above the $1 million Same Day ACH limit that have to move today. The bigger savings come from automating invoice entry and approvals before the payment goes out.
