## Is Bill.com worth it?

**As of 2026, yes, for a US small business where several people create, approve, and pay vendor bills and the outside accountant already works in BILL.** Bill.com, now branded simply as BILL, is the standard small-business accounts payable tool. Its cost has two parts: a per-user monthly subscription on the AP and AR plans, plus a fee on most payments ($0.59 per ACH and $1.99 per mailed check on bill.com/pricing, read September 12, 2026). So the bill grows with how many people touch a payment, not with how many invoices arrive. What it doesn't do is process invoices: reading, coding, and matching them still takes hours.

If your whole AP team is one owner paying a few dozen bills a month, a per-seat tool is more than you need.

## What is Bill.com?

**BILL is a financial operations platform for small and midsize businesses. It covers accounts payable, accounts receivable, and spend and expense management in one account.** On the AP side you receive or upload vendor bills, route them for approval, pay by ACH, virtual card, credit card, or check, and sync the result to your accounting software. On the AR side you send invoices and get paid by ACH and card. BILL Spend & Expense adds corporate cards, budgets, and expense tracking. The naming trips people up: Bill.com, BILL, and Bill are the same company and the same product.

## Is Bill.com legit?

**Yes.** BILL is run by BILL Holdings, Inc., a public company listed on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker BILL. It files annual and quarterly reports with the SEC, including a Form 10-K for the fiscal year that ended June 30, 2026. Payments move over the standard ACH, card, check, and wire networks. The better question is fit: BILL charges per user, and its per-payment fees apply on every plan.

## How much does Bill.com cost?

**BILL's AP and AR plans are Essentials, Team, Corporate, and Enterprise. Direct customers pay per user per month, and Enterprise and multi-entity companies get custom pricing.** That structure comes from bill.com/pricing as read September 12, 2026. The dollar price per seat did not show up in the page text we read, so confirm it on bill.com before you budget. For a rough guide only: Tekpon reports 2026 seat prices of $45, $55, and $89 per user per month for Essentials, Team, and Corporate, and Cleo Pay's 2026 guide uses $49, $65, and $89. They disagree on the lower tiers.

Three details on BILL's own page decide what you actually pay:

- **Who counts as a seat.** On Essentials and Team, every user is billed as a standard user. Corporate and Enterprise separate full-feature users from lower-cost approver-only users.
- **Which tier syncs.** BILL describes Team as the tier that adds automatic two-way sync with leading accounting software. Enterprise lists automatic two-way sync with QuickBooks Enterprise, Oracle NetSuite, Sage Intacct, and Microsoft Dynamics, plus purchase-order sync with two- and three-way matching.
- **What is free.** Corporate lets you add unlimited purchase requesters for free, and BILL Spend & Expense costs $0 per user per month.

## Bill.com fees

Per-transaction fees apply no matter which plan you're on. These are the fees for the paying business, as listed on bill.com/pricing on September 12, 2026:

| Fee | BILL's listed price | Notes |
| --- | --- | --- |
| ACH / ePayment | $0.59 | Per payment |
| Check | $1.99 | BILL mails the check for you |
| Pay Faster ACH | $11.99 | Same-day if scheduled by 10:00 a.m. PT; next-day if scheduled by 6:00 p.m. PT |
| Pay Faster Check | $24.99 overnight, $19.99 two-day, $14.99 three-day | Expedited mailing |
| Instant Payment | 1.0% | $9.99 minimum, $100 maximum |
| International USD Wire | $19.99 | BILL notes this fee may be passed to the receiver |
| International FX Wire or Local Transfer | Free | Exchange rate applies |
| Void a check | $25.00 | Per check voided |
| Failed ACH from sender after receiver is paid | $50.00 | Per failed payment |
| 1099 e-filing to IRS | $2.99 per 1099 | $1.99 per 1099 via Accountant Console |
| 1099 direct state filing | $1.49 per 1099 | State copy |
| 1099 mail delivery to vendors | $1.99 per 1099 | Paper copy to the vendor |

The page also lists receiver-side fees, such as a vendor's instant transfer at 1% to 1.49% ($1 minimum). The card-payment fee did not show up in the text we read, so check it if you plan to pay vendors by card.

## The real math on a Bill.com month

BILL's cost is **a seat for every person who touches a payment, plus a fee for every payment on each rail**. Only the payment half can be checked to the penny on BILL's page today, so start there.

A business paying **100 vendors a month by ACH** pays 100 × $0.59 = **$59.00** in payment fees. Move 20 of them to mailed checks and the month becomes 80 × $0.59 + 20 × $1.99 = $47.20 + $39.80 = **$87.00**. Send five checks overnight instead and those five cost 5 × $24.99 = $124.95 on their own, more than the other 95 payments combined. At year end, e-filing and state-filing 1099s for 30 contractors costs 30 × ($2.99 + $1.49) = **$134.40**.

Now the seats. On Essentials and Team, the owner, the bookkeeper, and a manager who only approves bills are three standard users. Add a fourth approver and you add a full seat, whether that person approves two bills a month or two hundred. On Corporate, the same approver can sit on a lower-cost approver-only seat. So the question that sets your BILL bill is not how many invoices you get. It is how many people need to touch a payment, and on which tier. One more invoice paid by ACH costs 59 cents. One more person costs a seat.

## What Bill.com does well

- **The accountant ecosystem.** Accounting firms manage client entities through BILL's Accountant Console, which is why so many outside accountants already work in it.
- **Approval controls that grow with the team.** Team adds more detailed AP and AR controls, and Corporate adds discounted approver-only users.
- **Cheap ACH at volume.** At $0.59 per payment, the fee is tiny next to the labor of cutting checks by hand.
- **Spend and expense with no software fee.** Cards, budgets, and expense tracking cost $0 per user per month. BILL advertises credit lines from $1,000 to $5M, not guaranteed and set when your application is approved.
- **ERP reach at the top.** Enterprise lists two-way sync with NetSuite, Sage Intacct, Microsoft Dynamics, and QuickBooks Enterprise.

## Where Bill.com stops

- **Per-seat pricing gets expensive when many people approve.** On Essentials and Team, every approver pays for a standard seat.
- **Every plan pays fees.** No tier removes the per-payment fee, and rush payments are what make a month expensive.
- **Custom pricing at the top.** Multi-entity and Enterprise pricing is quote-only, so the companies with the most complicated AP see the least pricing up front.
- **It pays invoices; it does not process them.** Reading a messy PDF, coding it to the right account and job, and matching it to what was ordered are still the slow parts.

## Bill.com vs Melio and Ramp

**Melio charges per business, Ramp's core bill pay is free, and BILL charges per user.** If it's just an owner and a bookkeeper paying vendors, Melio is usually cheaper. Our [Melio review](/blog/melio-review) covers its plans and fees. If you're willing to move your company cards, Ramp's free tier is the best value, and our [Ramp review](/blog/ramp-review) explains how card fees pay for it. BILL wins on approval depth and on how many accounting firms already use it. If you're also looking at Tipalti or Stampli, the full comparison is in our roundup of the [best accounts payable automation software](/blog/best-accounts-payable-automation-software).

## Where the hours actually go

Paying a bill is the cheap part of accounts payable, and BILL makes it cheaper. The expensive part is everything before the payment: pulling the invoice out of an inbox, reading a vendor's odd PDF, coding it to the right account, class, and job, sending it to the right approver, and matching it to the purchase order. BILL's seat price pays for the approval routing. It does not do the reading and coding a 300-invoice month across three entities needs.

That is where BILL stops and AP automation starts. Our guide to how to [automate accounts payable with AI](/blog/automate-accounts-payable-with-ai) walks through each step. When we build it, [AI document processing](/solutions/ai-document-processing) that reads, codes, and routes invoices typically runs $8K to $20K over 2 to 4 weeks. A broader workflow automation build that connects capture, approvals, and your accounting system typically runs $10K to $25K over 3 to 4 weeks. BILL can stay underneath either one to send the payments. What changes is who does the typing, and whether everyone who used to type in bills still needs a seat.

## The bottom line

Bill.com is worth it when several people handle your bills and your accountant already works in BILL. Pick the tier for the sync and approval controls you need, count every approver as a seat, and run your real mix of payments through the fee table above before you sign. It is not worth it for a one-person AP team that just needs to pay vendors, and it will not process your invoices for you. When the bottleneck moves from paying bills to reading, coding, and approving them, book a free strategy session and we will run your actual invoice volume through the numbers.

Yes. Usually not for a very small team.
