# How Long Does Direct Deposit Take? Payday at 8:30 a.m., and the Two Fridays You Can't Pay On

**By Justin McKelvey** · Published October 03, 2026 · Updated October 03, 2026 · 7 min read

> Direct deposit settles at 8:30 a.m. ET on payday and must be available by the end of that day; some banks post it up to two days early. As of October 2026, Christmas and New Year's Day fall on Fridays, so Friday payrolls settle Thursday 12/24 and 12/31.

## How long does direct deposit take? The short answer

**A direct deposit lands on payday. The employer's payroll provider sends the file ahead of payday, the Federal Reserve settles it at 8:30 a.m. Eastern on the pay date, and the bank has to make the money available by the end of that day. Many banks post it in the morning, and some (Capital One and SoFi say so on their own pages) post it up to two days early. A Same Day ACH deposit must be available by 5:00 p.m. local time on the day it is sent.**

Nacha, the body that runs the ACH network, says 93% of American workers get paid by direct deposit. So when a paycheck is late it is almost never the network. It is a cutoff someone missed, a bank holiday, or a new account. Every rule below was read on October 3, 2026 from Nacha's rules pages, the Federal Reserve's FedACH processing and holiday schedules, and the current text of Regulation CC (12 CFR 229.10) on ecfr.gov.

## How the money actually moves

1. **Payroll is approved.** You (or your bookkeeper) approve the run in Gusto, ADP, QuickBooks Payroll or whatever you use. Each provider has its own approval deadline, and it comes before the network's. That deadline is in your provider's help center, and it is the one that actually decides payday.
2. **The provider's bank sends an ACH file to the Fed.** For a standard (future-dated) deposit, FedACH takes files until 10:30 a.m., 2:45 p.m., 4:45 p.m., 8:00 p.m. and 10:45 p.m. ET, plus a last window at 2:15 a.m. ET, and every one of them settles at **8:30 a.m. ET** on the business day the file names as payday.
3. **The employee's bank gets notice.** The Fed distributes the file to the receiving bank before settlement. This early notice is the whole trick behind "get paid two days early" accounts.
4. **Settlement and availability.** Nacha's general rule: for a credit that is not same-day, the bank must make the money available "no later than the end of the Settlement Date." Regulation CC sets the same floor for any electronic payment: available by the business day after the bank receives it in finally collected funds, which for ACH is settlement.

## Direct deposit timing at a glance (as of October 2026)

| Type of deposit | When it settles | Latest the bank can make it available |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Standard payroll direct deposit | 8:30 a.m. ET on payday | End of payday (Nacha general rule) |
| Same Day ACH, file in by 10:30 a.m. ET | 1:00 p.m. ET same day | 5:00 p.m. at the receiving bank's local time |
| Same Day ACH, file in by 2:45 p.m. ET | 5:00 p.m. ET same day | 5:00 p.m. at the receiving bank's local time |
| Same Day ACH, file in by 4:45 p.m. ET | 6:00 p.m. ET same day | The receiving bank's posting time (the 5 p.m. rule above was written for the first two windows) |
| "Early pay" bank account | Same as standard | Posted when the bank receives notice, "typically up to two days before" payday (SoFi's wording) |
| First paycheck after switching banks | Same as standard | Same, but early pay often skips it (Capital One lists "you recently set up direct deposit for the first time" as a reason) |

Same Day ACH can carry up to $1 million per payment, per Nacha. Whether your payroll provider offers it, and what it charges, is up to the provider. Wires and ACH compare differently on speed and cost; the side-by-side is in [ACH vs wire transfer](/blog/ach-vs-wire-transfer).

## Why some employees get paid two days early and others don't

Nothing about the payment is different. The same file settles at the same time for everyone. The difference is when each bank decides to let its customer spend the money.

Capital One describes its own feature plainly: "We often receive a message up to two days prior to your direct deposit to let us know that the money is on the way." SoFi says early access "is based on the timing in which we receive notice of impending payment from the Federal Reserve, which is typically up to two days before the scheduled payment date, but may vary." Both say it can be two days early, one day early, or on payday.

So if one of your employees gets paid Wednesday and the rest on Friday, payroll did not do anything wrong. Their bank is fronting the money. The practical consequence for an owner: that file is only "early" if *you* submitted early. If your provider's cutoff gets missed and the pay date slides, nobody's bank can post a file it hasn't received.

## The Q4 2026 payroll calendar: two Fridays you can't pay on

This is the part most "how long does direct deposit take" answers skip. ACH settles on Federal Reserve business days only, and the Fed's 2026 holiday schedule puts two holidays on Fridays this year.

| Fed holiday (2026) | Day of week | What it does to a direct deposit |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Columbus Day, October 12 | Monday | No settlement Monday. A Friday 10/16 payday is unaffected, but the provider's processing days shrink by one that week. |
| Veterans Day, November 11 | Wednesday | No settlement Wednesday. A Wednesday payday has to move to Tuesday 11/10. |
| Thanksgiving, November 26 | Thursday | No settlement Thursday. Friday 11/27 is a business day for the Fed, so a Friday payday still settles, but only if the file was approved before the holiday. |
| **Christmas, December 25** | **Friday** | No settlement. A Friday payday has to settle Thursday 12/24, which means approving it a day earlier than usual. |
| **New Year's Day, January 1, 2027** | **Friday** | Same again one week later: settle Thursday 12/31. |

The Fed's holiday schedule also lists when FedACH processing stops and starts: for Columbus Day it ends Saturday, October 10 at 3 a.m. ET and resumes Monday, October 12 at 5:30 p.m. ET. A file that misses Friday's windows doesn't move until Monday night, and it settles Tuesday morning.

A worked example. A 12-person shop pays every other Friday and its provider needs approval two business days before payday. For a normal Friday that's Wednesday. For Christmas week the pay date becomes Thursday 12/24, so approval moves to Tuesday 12/22. For New Year's week it becomes Thursday 12/31, so approval moves to Tuesday 12/29, in the week most people are out. Miss that one and the paychecks land Monday, January 4. The two-day count is the example's assumption, not a provider's published number; use your own provider's.

## What causes a late direct deposit (and who can fix it)

- **The run was approved after the provider's cutoff.** Most common, and fully in your hands. The fix is a calendar reminder tied to the cutoff, not to payday.
- **A Fed holiday.** See the table above. Banks are closed for settlement even if branches are open.
- **A new or changed account.** Wrong digits, a closed account, or a first deposit the receiving bank holds for review. A rejected deposit comes back as an ACH return, and the pay has to be re-sent.
- **The receiving bank posts late in the day.** It is allowed to: the rule is end of settlement day, not 9 a.m.
- **It was a paper check.** If someone is still paid by check, the rules are entirely different; how long that takes is in [how long it takes for a check to clear](/blog/how-long-does-it-take-for-a-check-to-clear).

## When payday can't wait: the options and their costs

If a run was missed, there are three ways to still pay on time, from cheapest to most expensive. First, ask your provider whether it can send the run as Same Day ACH: a file in by 10:30 a.m. ET is spendable by 5 p.m. that day. Second, a wire for one person who can't wait, which settles in hours and costs a fee per wire; the cutoffs and timing are in [how long a wire transfer takes](/blog/how-long-does-a-wire-transfer-take). Third, a manual check, which is the slowest of the three. What your bank charges you for ACH versus a wire is broken down in [ACH fees](/blog/ach-fees).

## Take the cutoff off your plate

Most late payrolls come down to the same thing: a person remembering a date. The Fed publishes its holiday calendar five years out, and your provider publishes its cutoff. Joining the two is a job for a small automation: it reads the pay schedule, moves the approval reminder when a holiday lands in the window, and pings the approver until the run is in. That is the kind of back-office job we build with [AI workflow automation](/solutions/ai-workflow-automation), and it is a good first one because the cost of getting it wrong is your team's trust.

## The bottom line

Direct deposit takes as long as the payroll calendar says, and not a minute longer: settlement at 8:30 a.m. ET on payday, available by the end of that day, earlier if the employee's bank fronts it. Late pay almost always means a missed provider cutoff or a Fed holiday. For the rest of 2026, the dates to circle are Tuesday, December 22 and Tuesday, December 29, if your provider needs two days and you pay on Fridays.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### How long does direct deposit take?

A payroll direct deposit settles through the Federal Reserve at 8:30 a.m. Eastern on the pay date, and under Nacha's rules the receiving bank must make it available no later than the end of that day. Many banks post it in the morning. The payroll provider has to send the file before then, and its own approval cutoff, which comes earlier, is what decides whether pay arrives on time.

### Why did my coworker get paid two days early?

Their bank posts direct deposits when it gets advance notice from the Federal Reserve instead of waiting for settlement. Capital One and SoFi both say that notice typically arrives up to two days before payday. The payment itself is the same for everyone; the bank is choosing to front the money.

### Does direct deposit go through on weekends or holidays?

No. ACH settles only on Federal Reserve business days. In 2026 the Fed is closed for settlement on Columbus Day (Oct 12), Veterans Day (Nov 11), Thanksgiving (Nov 26) and Christmas (Dec 25), and on New Year's Day (Jan 1, 2027). A payday that lands on one of those moves to the business day before it, if the payroll was approved in time.

### What time does direct deposit hit?

Settlement is 8:30 a.m. Eastern on payday for standard ACH, so most banks post between midnight and the morning. The rule only requires availability by the end of the settlement day, so a bank that posts in the afternoon is within the rules. Same Day ACH sent by 10:30 a.m. ET must be available by 5:00 p.m. at the receiving bank's local time.

### How long does direct deposit take after I switch banks?

The first deposit to a new account follows the same settlement timing once payroll has the new details, but it is the one most likely to be delayed: a wrong digit causes an ACH return and a re-send, and early-pay features often skip the first deposit (Capital One lists a first-time setup as a reason pay may not arrive early).

### Can an employer still pay on time after missing the payroll cutoff?

Sometimes. If the payroll provider supports Same Day ACH, a file submitted by 10:30 a.m. ET settles at 1:00 p.m. ET and must be spendable by 5:00 p.m. local time. Otherwise the options are a wire for whoever can't wait (hours, with a fee per wire) or a manual check (slowest).
