## How much does OpenRouter cost? The short answer

As of November 1, 2026, OpenRouter doesn't mark up model tokens. It charges a fee when you buy credits: 5.5% on Standard and 8% on Business, with no subscription and no minimum. The Free plan has no fee but is capped at 50 requests a day on free models. Enterprise is priced by contract. If you bring your own provider keys, the first $25,000 of list-price usage a month carries no OpenRouter fee on Standard or Business.

The fee is the smaller decision. On the same workflow, our math below shows model choice swings the bill by 40 times, while the fee moves it 5.5%.

## OpenRouter plans and prices

| | Free | Standard | Business | Enterprise |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Fee on credits | None | 5.5% | 8% | Contract, discounts available |
| Models (OpenRouter's count) | 25+ free | 600+ | 600+ | 600+ |
| Rate limits | 50 requests a day | From the provider | From the provider | Higher available |
| Auto-routing, budgets, prompt caching | No | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| US or EU in-region routing | No | No | Yes | Yes |
| Workspaces | 5 | 5 | 1,000 | Custom |
| SSO and contractual SLAs | No | No | No | Yes |

Taxes are extra where they apply. Failed attempts aren't charged for model tokens, so with fallback you pay only for the run that answers. Routing through its auto option adds no fee.

## What the fee costs at real spend levels

| Credits bought a month | Standard fee | Business fee | Your own keys (BYOK) |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| $100 | $5.50 | $8 | $0 |
| $1,000 | $55 | $80 | $0 |
| $10,000 | $550 | $800 | $0 |
| $30,000 | $1,650 | $2,400 | $250 |

The last column needs a note. With your own keys, the provider bills you directly, so you hold a separate account and balance with each one. Past $25,000 a month, OpenRouter charges 5% of what the extra usage would cost at list price, which is how $30,000 comes to $250.

BYOK makes sense when you've already got provider accounts. At $10,000 a month, it saves $6,600 a year over Standard. At $100 a month, it saves $66 a year, and the extra accounts probably aren't worth it.

## What one automation costs by model

Here's a worked example: a support workflow that reads 20,000 tickets a month and writes a short summary and a category for each. Say each run uses 1,500 input tokens and 200 output tokens, for 30 million in and 4 million out. Prices are per million tokens from OpenRouter's public model list on November 1, 2026.

| Model | Input / output | Monthly tokens cost | With 5.5% fee |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Claude Haiku 5.5 | $0.10 / $0.50 | $5 | $5.28 |
| DeepSeek V4.1 Flash | $0.15 / $0.60 | $6.90 | $7.28 |
| GPT-6.1 Terra | $1 / $5 | $50 | $52.75 |
| Claude Sonnet 5.5 | $2 / $10 | $100 | $105.50 |
| Claude Opus 5.5 | $4 / $20 | $200 | $211 |

The same job runs from $5 to $200. Compared with that 40x range, the fee is rounding. If a cheap model handles sorting and only the hard tickets go up a level, you've saved far more than OpenRouter charges. That's the case for a router: you can test models without rewriting the integration. The batch versions in the same list cost half as much, for work that doesn't need an instant answer.

## Is OpenRouter free?

Partly. Free models cost nothing, with limits of 20 requests a minute and 50 a day. Failed attempts count toward that cap. Buying at least $10 of credits raises it to 1,000 a day, which is $10.55 with the Standard fee.

The cap is what breaks a production workflow. Fifty a day is about 1,500 runs a month, and the ticket example above needs about 650 runs a day, 13 times the cap. Treat free models as a way to test.

The count needs a caveat too. The pricing page says 25+ free models and 600+ models overall. OpenRouter's public model feed returned 452 entries, 17 of them free, in our read on November 1. Check the model you plan to use, not the headline.

## OpenRouter vs Vercel AI Gateway vs Cloudflare AI Gateway

| | OpenRouter | Vercel AI Gateway | Cloudflare AI Gateway |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Fee | 5.5% or 8% on credits; BYOK free to $25,000 a month | No markup and no platform fee, including BYOK | Core features free on all plans |
| Free allowance | 25+ free models listed | $5 of credit a month, selected models | Log limits vary by account |
| Billing for tokens | Credits | Credits | Pricing page covers gateway features, not model tokens |

On published fees alone, Vercel's zero beats 5.5%. At $1,000 a month, that's $660 a year. It doesn't settle it, though. Compare which models each one offers for your workflow, and whether your team already uses that platform. If you only call one provider and don't need fallback, going direct has no router fee at all.

## Is the Business plan worth it?

Business costs 2.5 points more than Standard, so $25 a month per $1,000 of credits. It buys in-region routing, advanced notifications, 1,000 workspaces and a signed data agreement on request. There's no contract, and you can downgrade 30 days after upgrading.

Buy it if a client or regulator needs inference kept in the US or EU. If you're just separating dev from production, Standard's five workspaces already do that.

## Who can build AI workflows on OpenRouter for my business?

Token prices are the easy part of an AI build. [What an AI agent costs](/blog/how-much-does-an-ai-agent-cost) depends more on integrations, testing and upkeep, and [build vs buy](/blog/build-vs-buy-ai-agents) is usually the first call to make. For sold prices across the market, see [AI automation pricing](/blog/ai-automation-pricing).

SuperDupr, the AI ops shop Justin McKelvey runs, builds these workflows, including choosing which steps need an expensive model and which don't. [AI workflow automation](/solutions/ai-workflow-automation) projects run $10,000 to $25,000 over 2 to 4 weeks, then $200 to $2,000 a month to run. It starts with a free 30-minute strategy session. We don't resell OpenRouter.

A workflow also needs something to trigger it. [Automation platform pricing](/blog/automation-platform-pricing) covers those tools.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### How much does OpenRouter cost?

As of November 1, 2026, OpenRouter has no subscription. It bills models at the provider's list price and charges a fee when you buy credits, 5.5% on Standard and 8% on Business. Enterprise is priced by contract.

### Does OpenRouter mark up model prices?

No. Its FAQ says inference is billed at the provider's list price on every plan. The fee is charged on credit purchases, not on individual requests.

### Is OpenRouter free?

It offers free models capped at 20 requests a minute and 50 a day. Buying at least $10 of credits raises the daily cap to 1,000. Failed attempts count toward it.

### What does bring your own key cost on OpenRouter?

On Standard and Business, the first $25,000 of list-price usage a month has no OpenRouter fee, and your provider bills you directly. Above that, OpenRouter charges 5% of what the same requests would cost at list price.

### Is OpenRouter cheaper than going direct?

No, if you buy credits, since list prices match and the fee is added. It can still pay off when you use several models and want one integration, fallback and shared budgets. BYOK removes the fee up to $25,000 a month.
