# Restaurant SEO in 2026: AI Picks Restaurants From Critics' Lists, Not Your Website. Our 5-City Test

**By Justin McKelvey** · Published October 16, 2026 · Updated October 16, 2026 · 8 min read

> Restaurant SEO for AI search is about the pages AI reads, and they are not yours. On October 16, 2026 we asked AI for the best restaurant in Austin, Dallas, Houston, Columbus and San Diego: 0 of 50 sources were restaurant websites, OpenTable was read in 4 cities, and 4 of 5 first picks came with a critic's credential. The data and the fix list.

## Does AI recommend restaurants from their own websites?

**Almost never. On October 16, 2026 we asked an AI search engine for "the best restaurant" in Austin, Dallas, Houston, Columbus and San Diego. Across the 50 pages it cited, not one was a restaurant's own website. The answers were built from critics' lists, OpenTable, The Infatuation, Time Out, local papers and visitor bureaus, and 4 of the 5 first picks came with a named credential: a New York Times list, D Magazine's No. 1, a James Beard-recognized chef, three Michelin stars. Restaurant SEO for AI search in 2026 is getting onto the pages AI reads, then making sure they describe you correctly.**

That is the opposite of auto repair, where the first shop named in every city we tested came from its own site.

## The test: "best restaurant" in five cities

We sent each question once, on October 16, 2026, to Perplexity's Sonar model with live web search turned on. It returns every page it cited, so we could count them. Treat the named restaurants as a snapshot, since they rotate from run to run; the kinds of sources were the steadier signal.

| City | First pick, and the reason given | Restaurants named | What the 10 sources were |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Austin, TX | Canje: "appeared on The New York Times' restaurant list" | 8 | Michelin Guide, Eater, The Infatuation, Time Out, Visit Austin, Tripadvisor, CultureMap, a hotel's dining guide, a newspaper list, a rental-car blog |
| Dallas, TX | Lucia: "the new No. 1 on D Magazine's 2026 list" | 6 | D Magazine, Dallas Observer, Dallas Morning News, Eater, Visit Dallas (Michelin page), OpenTable (2), Tripadvisor, Time Out, a rental-car blog |
| Houston, TX | Maximo: "led by James Beard-recognized chef Adrian Torres" | 6 | Houston Chronicle (3, incl. its Top 100 and Michelin pages), OpenTable (2), The Infatuation, Time Out, houston.com, two travel and dining blogs |
| Columbus, OH | The Refectory: classic French, wine list, service | 6 | OpenTable (5), The Infatuation, Columbus Navigator, Tripadvisor, two travel and dining blogs |
| San Diego, CA | Addison: "San Diego County's only three-Michelin-star restaurant" | 5 | San Diego Tourism Authority (2, incl. its Michelin page), San Diego Magazine, Union-Tribune, Fox 5, The Infatuation, OpenTable, Time Out, a dining blog, a rental-car blog |

The source counts across all 50: OpenTable 10 pages in 4 of 5 cities, The Infatuation 4 of 5, Time Out 4 of 5, a Michelin page or Michelin write-up 4 of 5, Tripadvisor 3 of 5, a local newspaper, city magazine or city guide 5 of 5. Yelp.com was cited zero times, but Yelp-based rankings reached two answers secondhand, through CultureMap in Austin and Fox 5 in San Diego. No answer quoted a Google star rating. Two quoted OpenTable instead: Casa Pollastro in Dallas and Piatto Ristorante in Houston were each named as best-reviewed on OpenTable.

## Narrow questions read your listings, still not your site

Diners rarely ask for "the best restaurant." They ask for a cuisine or an occasion. We asked two the same day:

- **"Best Mexican restaurant in Dallas, TX."** Five restaurants named. Two of the ten sources were individual OpenTable restaurant pages (The Mexican and Purepecha), and a third was The Mexican's listing in the Visit Dallas directory. That is where the answer got The Mexican's street address and Purepecha's Thursday-to-Saturday dinner schedule. No restaurant's own site was read.
- **"Best brunch in Houston, TX."** Seven restaurants named, all from editorial brunch lists (houston.com, the Houston Chronicle, The Infatuation, Thrillist, Time Out, Eater, Houston Press, an OpenTable feature). One source was a restaurant's own page, a chain's Houston location page, and that chain was not named.

Across all seven answers, 1 of 70 sources was a restaurant website. Your site still matters for the guest who already knows your name. For being named, the work is upstream.

## Restaurant SEO fix list, in the order the test points to

1. **Your OpenTable or Resy page, complete.** OpenTable pages were read in 4 of 5 cities and gave AI the address, hours and dinner days it repeated. Fill in cuisine, price band, the dishes you are known for, private dining and the days you serve. If you are not on a reservation platform at all, you are missing the most-read restaurant page in this test.
2. **Your visitor bureau listing.** Visit Austin, Visit Dallas and the San Diego Tourism Authority were all sources, and Visit Dallas's directory page supplied a named restaurant's details. Most bureaus list member businesses; ask yours what a listing takes.
3. **Be easy for critics and list-makers to write about.** You cannot buy a spot on The Infatuation or a city magazine's 50 best, and nobody should try. You can keep a press page with your chef's background, opening date, signature dishes, and photos editors may use, and tell local food writers when something real changes: a new chef, a new menu, an anniversary. Every first pick in our test had a story a writer had already told.
4. **Put your credentials in words.** If you are in the Michelin Guide, on a local Top 100, or your chef has a James Beard nod, say so on your site and every listing, with the year. AI quoted the credential as the reason in 4 of 5 first picks.
5. **Google Business Profile.** The most specific primary category that is true ("Mexican restaurant" beats "Restaurant"), your menu link, your reservation link, hours that match OpenTable exactly. Mismatched hours across listings are the error a guest finds at the door.
6. **Tripadvisor.** Claim it and answer reviews. It was read in 3 of 5 cities and both Dallas answers.
7. **Schema markup on your own site.** Use the Restaurant type with servesCuisine, hasMenu, acceptsReservations and priceRange, and publish the menu as text on a page, not only as a PDF or photo, so every engine can read the dishes.

## What is it worth to get named?

We did not find a current national average check we could read and cite today, so use yours. A worked example you can change: say your average guest spends $45 and AI-referred diners add one table of two on 25 nights a month. That is $2,250 a month, $27,000 a year, before those guests come back. If they book through OpenTable's network you pay its per-cover fee, reported at $1.00 to $1.50 a guest; our [Resy vs OpenTable](/blog/resy-vs-opentable) breakdown has the plan math and the sources behind those figures. That is still a cheap guest.

## Who can do restaurant SEO for you?

## Frequently Asked Questions

### How do restaurants get recommended by ChatGPT and other AI search?

By being on the pages AI reads about restaurants. In our October 16, 2026 test across five cities, none of the 50 sources behind the "best restaurant" answers was a restaurant's own website. The answers came from OpenTable, The Infatuation, Time Out, Michelin pages, local papers and visitor bureaus, and 4 of 5 first picks were introduced with a critic's or award credential.

### What is the best SEO strategy for a restaurant in 2026?

Complete your OpenTable or Resy page, get listed with your visitor bureau, keep a press page that makes you easy for food writers to cover, state any real credentials with the year, use the most specific true Google Business Profile category with menu and reservation links, claim Tripadvisor, and add Restaurant schema with your menu as text.

### Does OpenTable help restaurant SEO?

It did in our test. OpenTable pages were 10 of the 50 sources in the five city answers, and in the Dallas Mexican-restaurant answer two restaurants' details came straight from their OpenTable pages. Two answers also quoted OpenTable's best-reviewed lists; none quoted a Google rating.

### Does a restaurant website still matter for SEO?

For guests who already know your name, yes: hours, menu and reservations. For being named by AI, less than you'd think. Across seven restaurant questions on October 16, 2026, 1 of 70 sources was a restaurant website, and that restaurant was not named.

### How much does restaurant SEO cost?

A manager can work through the fix list in-house. SuperDupr, Justin McKelvey's company, does it as Local AI Search for $297 a month with no setup fee, month-to-month.
