> Your business is usually missing from Google for one of five reasons: the profile is not verified, it is still in review (up to 5 business days), it was suspended, the details are incomplete, or it shows up but ranks below competitors. Here is how to tell which one you have, using Google's own help pages read October 16, 2026, and the fix for each.

## Why is my business not showing up on Google?

**Usually one of five reasons: the profile is not verified yet, it is still in Google's review (verification reviews take up to 5 business days), it was suspended for breaking a listing rule, the details are incomplete or wrong, or it does show up but ranks below closer and better-reviewed competitors. Google's own help pages, which we read on October 16, 2026, say local results are "mainly based on relevance, distance, and popularity" and that "there's no way to request or pay for a better local ranking." Below is how to tell which of the five you have, in the order to check them.**

First, rule out the false alarm. Search your exact business name plus your city. If your profile appears for that but not for "plumber near me," you are not missing from Google. You are being outranked, and that is a different fix (step 5).

## Which problem do you have? Match the symptom

| What you see | Likely cause | What Google's help pages say | The fix |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Nothing shows, even for your exact name | Not verified, or verification still under review | "Verification reviews take up to 5 business days. On rare occasions, reviews may take longer." | Finish verification at business.google.com, then wait out the 5 days |
| A "Get verified" button came back | Google could not fully verify you, often after you edited key details | The button reappearing "means Google couldn't completely verify your business" | Re-verify; try another method if more than one is offered |
| Profile shows as suspended or you lost access | A guideline violation (name, address, duplicate profile) | "We may suspend or disable Business Profiles that don't follow our guidelines" | Fix the violation, then file one appeal in the appeals tool |
| You show up for your name, not for your service | Relevance: wrong or vague category, thin info | "Relevance is how well a Business Profile matches what someone is searching for" | Most specific true category, full services, hours, photos |
| You show up in your town, not the next one over | Distance | "Distance refers to how far each business is from the customer who's searching" | Nothing in the profile changes distance; service pages for each town help your website rank there |
| You show up, but on page two or under the map's "more places" | Prominence: fewer reviews and mentions than competitors | Prominence is based on "how many websites link to your business and how many reviews you have" | A steady review ask after every job, plus listings on the sites in your trade |

## 1. Is your Business Profile verified?

An unverified profile is the most common reason a new business is invisible. Google says verifying "tells Google that you're authorized to represent the business, so it's more likely to show up in search results." Three details from its verification page trip people up:

- **You don't pick the method.** "Verification methods are automatically determined by Google and can't be changed." You may get phone or text, email, a live video call, a recorded video, or a postcard, and sometimes more than one is required.
- **Phone trees block the code.** Google calls or texts your business number, and "Interactive Voice Response (IVR) systems won't get the code." If your main line goes to a menu or an answering service, use a method that reaches a person.
- **Don't touch the profile while a postcard is in the mail.** Editing your name, address or category voids the code, requesting a new code cancels the old one, and codes expire after 30 days.

After you finish, Google reviews it for up to 5 business days. It can be instant if your website is already verified in Google Search Console.

## 2. Was your profile suspended?

Suspensions come from Google's listing guidelines. The ones local service businesses break most often:

- **Keywords in the business name.** Your name must be your real-world name. Google's own example: "Midas Auto Service Experts" is not acceptable, "Midas" is. "Austin Plumbing & Drain Experts 24/7" when the truck says "Ruiz Plumbing" is the same mistake.
- **A virtual office or a mailbox as your address.** "If your business rents a physical mailing address but doesn't operate out of that location, also known as a virtual office, that location isn't eligible." P.O. boxes aren't acceptable either.
- **Showing a home address as a service-area business.** If you go to your customers, Google says to hide the address: "if you're a plumber and run your business from your residential address, clear the address from your Business Profile." Set a service area instead, which "shouldn't extend farther than about 2 hours of driving time" from your base.
- **A second profile for the same location.** One profile per business location. A duplicate made "to start fresh" is how a fixable problem becomes a bigger one.

To get back, fix the violation first, then open Google's Business Profile appeals tool. You can attach evidence such as a business registration, a business license, tax certificates or a utility bill, and the name and address on them should match the profile. Google is plain about two rules: "Do not create a new Business Profile for the same business," and "Appeals can only be submitted once." If the appeal is denied, Google offers an additional review where you can add evidence you didn't send the first time.

## 3. Are your details complete and correct?

Google: "If your business info isn't accurate, your Business Profile might not show up for relevant searches in your area." Check these against what's true today:

- **Category.** Pick categories that finish the sentence "This business IS a," not "has a," and choose "the fewest number of categories it takes to describe your overall core business," as specific as possible. "Plumber" beats "Contractor."
- **Hours.** Your regular customer-facing hours, plus special hours for holidays. By-appointment businesses are an exception Google lists.
- **Phone and website.** A local number you control, and a website for that location. No numbers or links that forward to a lead-generation page.
- **Description.** What you do, where, and since when. Google does not allow links or sale prices in it.

## 4. Does it show on Google Maps but not in Search, or the other way around?

Both come from the same Business Profile, so a gap between them is usually about the search, not the listing. Distance is one of Google's three local ranking factors, so you can appear for someone standing in your neighborhood and not for someone across town. If you're missing from Maps entirely, check the pin: Google lets you place it by hand when your address has no street number or the map can't find it. If you hid your address as a service-area business, there is no street pin to find; Google says it "determines how best to display your business address based on your business information and information from other sources."

## 5. You show up, but below your competitors

This is the most common answer for an established business, and it's the one people misread as "not showing up." Google ranks local results on three things, in its words:

- **Relevance:** how well your profile matches the search. Complete, detailed info is the lever.
- **Distance:** how far you are from the searcher. You can't change it.
- **Prominence:** how well-known you are, "based on info like how many websites link to your business and how many reviews you have. More reviews and positive ratings can help your business's local ranking."

So the work is: answer and ask for reviews after every job, add photos of real work, get listed on the directories your trade's customers use, and give your website a page for each service and each town you serve. That last part matters more each month, because AI answers like ChatGPT and Google's AI Overviews read your website and listings to decide which two or three businesses to name. In our [SEO for contractors](/blog/seo-for-contractors) test, asked for "the best kitchen remodeling contractor in Austin," the AI named four residential remodelers and read three of their websites to decide.

## Who can fix this for you?

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Why is my business not showing up on Google?

The five usual reasons are an unverified Business Profile, a verification still under review (Google says up to 5 business days), a suspension for breaking a listing guideline, incomplete or wrong details, or a profile that does show up but ranks below closer or better-reviewed competitors. Search your exact business name plus your city first: if you appear for that, you are being outranked, not missing.

### Why is my business not showing up on Google Maps?

Maps uses the same Business Profile as Search, so check verification and suspension first. If the profile is live, distance is one of Google's three local ranking factors, so you may show for nearby searchers and not for people across town. If your pin is wrong or missing, Google lets you place it on the map by hand.

### How long does it take for a business to show up on Google after verification?

Google's help page says verification reviews take up to 5 business days and, on rare occasions, longer. It can be instant if your website is already verified in Google Search Console.

### Can I pay Google to rank higher in local results?

No. Google's local ranking help page says there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. Local results are mainly based on relevance, distance and prominence, and prominence includes how many reviews you have and how many websites link to you.

### What do I do if my Google Business Profile is suspended?

Fix the guideline problem first (a keyword-stuffed name, a virtual-office address, a visible home address for a service-area business, or a duplicate profile), then file one appeal in Google's Business Profile appeals tool with evidence such as a business license or utility bill. Appeals can only be submitted once, and Google says not to create a new profile for the same business.

### How much does it cost to fix a business that is not showing up on Google?

Verifying and correcting a profile is free and an owner can do it in an afternoon. Ongoing ranking work is the paid part. SuperDupr, Justin McKelvey's company, does it as Local AI Search for $297 a month with no setup fee, month-to-month.
