Amazon Connect Pricing 2026: Per-Minute Rates, What an AI Phone Agent Really Costs, and the $100-a-Day Connector

Amazon Connect charges $0.038 a minute for voice, $0.010 per chat message, $0.014 per SMS and $0.080 per email, with no seats or minimums, as of October 21, 2026. A US number adds $0.03 a day and $0.0022 a minute inbound, so a call costs about $0.04 a minute all-in, including Amazon's AI self-service voice. Here is a 400-call AI phone agent bill ($49), where per-minute beats per-seat, and the charges that surprise people.

How much does Amazon Connect cost? The short answer

As of October 21, 2026, Amazon Connect charges by usage with no seats and no minimums: $0.038 a minute for voice, $0.010 per chat message, $0.014 per SMS or WhatsApp message and $0.080 per email. US phone service is extra but small: a US direct-dial number is $0.03 a day, and calls on it add $0.0022 a minute inbound and $0.0048 outbound. All-in, a call on a US number costs about $0.04 a minute, and that rate includes Amazon's own AI self-service voice. A 1,200-minute month runs about $49.

We read Amazon's Connect pricing page and its pricing appendix on October 21, 2026. The phone-line rates come from the worked examples in that appendix (US number in the US West Oregon region); Amazon notes rates vary by region and carrier and that taxes and telecom surcharges apply on top. The bills below are our arithmetic on those published rates.

Amazon Connect rates, side by side

UsageConnect Customer (current pricing)Customer Basic (older accounts)
Voice, per minute$0.038$0.018
Chat, per message$0.010$0.004
SMS and WhatsApp, per message$0.014 (plus delivery)$0.010 (plus delivery)
Email, per email$0.080$0.050
AI self-service on voiceIncluded (Amazon Lex, Nova Sonic)$0.008 a minute plus Lex charges
Conversational analytics and call summariesIncluded$0.015 a minute
Forecasting and agent schedulingIncluded$27 per agent a month
Agent performance evaluationsIncluded$12 per agent a month

The two columns are the whole story of Amazon's pricing change. Customer Basic is the old à la carte model: a cheaper channel rate, with each AI feature billed on top. Connect Customer folds the AI features into one higher rate. Amazon describes it as "no seat-based licensing requirements, and no tokens." New buyers price the left column; Amazon says some customers "might still be on Customer Basic."

Other lines on the appendix: outbound campaign calls are $0.045 a minute instead of $0.038, tasks $0.070 each, Cases $0.12 per case created, and in-app or web calling adds $0.010 a minute. Voice is billed per second with a 10-second minimum.

A worked bill: an AI phone agent taking 400 calls a month

The same workload we price on every voice platform: 400 inbound calls a month at 3 minutes each (1,200 minutes) on one US local number, answered by an AI agent. A quarter of callers get transferred to the owner's cell for 2 minutes, and every caller gets one confirmation text.

LineMathPer month
Voice service1,200 min × $0.038$45.60
US number30 days × $0.03$0.90
Inbound phone minutes1,200 × $0.0022$2.64
The agent answering calls$49.14
Transfers to the owner200 min × ($0.038 voice + $0.0048 outbound + $0.0022 inbound leg)$9.00
Confirmation texts400 × ($0.014 + $0.00883 US 10DLC delivery)$9.13
Totalabout $67

For comparison, the same 1,200 answered minutes cost about $111 to $184 on Retell, Vapi, Bland and ElevenLabs in our voice AI pricing comparison (rates read October 8, 2026), before transfers or texts. Connect comes in at less than half because its voice rate already covers the speech recognition, the Lex bot and Amazon's Nova Sonic speech model.

The catch is in the footnotes. An agent that looks things up in a Bedrock knowledge base, or calls tools through Bedrock AgentCore Gateway, pays Bedrock's own rates on top. Pick a third-party voice or transcriber (an ElevenLabs voice, say) and that provider bills you too. So the $49 is the floor for an agent built from Amazon's included parts, not the price of any agent you can imagine. On Customer Basic the same 1,200 minutes are $21.60 of voice plus $9.60 of self-service, about $35 with the phone line, plus Lex's own per-request charges and without Nova Sonic.

Per minute vs per seat: when Connect beats a help desk

A 5-person team answering phones by hand shows where usage pricing wins and loses. At about $0.0402 a minute on a US number (voice plus inbound line), 6,000 minutes a month costs $241.20 plus $0.90 for the number: $242.10. Zendesk's Suite Team, the first Zendesk plan with telephony, is $55 a seat billed annually, so $275 a month for 5 agents before Zendesk's own voice usage, as our Zendesk pricing page lays out.

The crossover is about 6,840 minutes a month for that team ($275 divided by $0.0402). Below it, Connect is cheaper and also includes the analytics and scheduling Zendesk sells as add-ons. Above it, seat pricing wins, and every extra 1,000 minutes adds about $40 to the Connect bill. A team that is busy on the phone all day (8,000 or more minutes for 5 people) usually pays less per seat. What Connect does not include is a help desk: there is no ticket history unless you pay $0.12 per case or connect a CRM.

The charges that surprise people

  • The AI's own chat messages are billed. Amazon counts every message to and from Connect, including the AI agent's replies and managers asking the AI questions. A 12-message web chat (6 from the customer, 6 from the bot) is $0.12, so 1,000 chats a month is $120. A bot that answers in two bubbles instead of one raises that by half.
  • Keeping your old phone system costs $100 a day. To run Connect's analytics on calls from another voice system you need a connector: $0.032 a minute plus $100 per connector per day. That is about $3,000 a month for one connector before a single minute, so it only makes sense for large call centers. A small business is better off moving the number.
  • Outbound costs more than inbound. Campaign calls are $0.045 a minute, and every outbound leg adds $0.0048 a minute of phone charges.
  • Customer Profiles with imported data are metered daily. Profiles built only from Connect's own data are free to read. Merge in your CRM records and each profile read is $0.005 a day, with more for profiles over 100 objects.
  • The free tier is not free minutes. The appendix lists 12 months of 1,000 Customer Profiles and 500 analytics chat messages a month, plus time-limited trials of analytics (100,000 voice minutes a month for 2 months), evaluations (30 days) and forecasting (90 days). That list has no free call minutes, so budget calls from the first one.

Amazon Connect vs Twilio for a voice agent

Twilio sells the phone line and leaves the AI to you: a local number is $1.15 a month and incoming calls are $0.0085 a minute, as our Twilio pricing page shows (twilio.com, read October 7, 2026). The phone line alone is cheaper on Connect ($0.90 a month and $0.0022 a minute), but the bigger difference is what comes with it. On Twilio you add a voice-agent platform such as Vapi or Retell; on Connect the $0.038 rate includes the bot, the speech model, conversational analytics and routing to human agents. The trade is control. Vapi and Retell let you swap models and voices freely and get a working agent in an afternoon; Connect means building inside AWS, with flows, IAM permissions and Bedrock to set up. Our Vapi vs Bland vs Retell comparison covers the platforms built for speed.

Is Amazon Connect worth it for a small business?

On usage price, yes: it is the cheapest per-minute AI phone agent we have priced, and there are no seats, contracts or minimums. On total cost, it depends on who builds it. Connect is a contact-center toolkit, not an app you switch on, and the setup work is the expensive part. It fits a business that already runs on AWS, takes thousands of calls a month, or wants human agents and an AI agent on one system with one bill.

Who can build an AI phone agent on Amazon Connect for me?

An AWS-certified contact-center partner, a freelancer who knows Connect flows and Lex, or a studio that builds the whole agent and wires it to your booking, CRM or job software. Ask any of them to price your real call volume and your busiest hour on Connect and on one voice-agent platform before choosing. SuperDupr, Justin McKelvey's company, builds AI voice agents for service businesses on the platform that fits the call volume, published at $5,000 to $10,000 for the build with $200 to $2,000 a month ongoing, and most go live in 2 to 4 weeks. The AWS or platform account stays in your business's name, so usage is billed at Amazon's own rates above. We do not resell Amazon Connect.

As of October 7, 2026, ElevenLabs is free for 10,000 credits a month, then $6 (Starter), $22 (Creator), $99 (Pro), $299 (Scale) or $990 (Business) a month.
