How much does Amazon SES cost? The short answer

As of November 1, 2026, Amazon SES costs $0.10 per 1,000 emails on à la carte pricing or $0.16 per 1,000 on the Essentials plan. Pro is $0.22 per 1,000 plus $105 a month, and Enterprise is $0.23 per 1,000 plus $500 a month. Attachments add $0.12 per GB. So 100,000 emails a month runs $10 or $16, against about $35 on SendGrid or Resend.

One thing changed this year. Since July 21, 2026, new SES accounts start on Essentials, not on the old $0.10 rate. That default costs 60% more per email unless you switch, and AWS's own page says you can.

Amazon SES plans and prices

Plan0 to 10M emails a month, per 1,00010M to 100MOver 100MFixed fee a month
À la carte$0.10Flat rate listedNone
Essentials$0.16$0.14$0.11None
Pro$0.22$0.17$0.12$105
Enterprise$0.23$0.18$0.13$500

The fixed fees are per account, per AWS Region. Tier rates are marginal, so each rate applies only to the emails inside that tier. New AWS customers can get up to $200 in Free Tier credits that apply to SES, but the pricing page lists no ongoing free email allowance.

Essentials or à la carte: is the extra $0.06 worth it?

This is the choice most small senders never realize they made. Essentials includes the SES side of Virtual Deliverability Manager, the dashboard that shows delivery rates and reputation problems. Bought alone, that costs $0.07 per 1,000 emails on top of the $0.10 sending rate, so it's $0.17 à la carte against $0.16 on the plan.

That gives a simple rule. If you'll use the deliverability dashboard, Essentials is a cent cheaper per 1,000. If you won't, à la carte saves $0.06 per 1,000, which is $6 a month at 100,000 emails and $150 a month at 2,500,000.

Pro is a different question. It includes managed dedicated IPs and email validation. On Essentials, a managed dedicated IP is an add-on, listed à la carte at $15 a month plus $0.08 per 1,000. If that rate applies, Essentials with the add-on costs $0.24 per 1,000 plus $15, and Pro costs $0.22 per 1,000 plus $105. They meet at 4.5 million emails a month. Below that, buy the add-on, unless you also want Pro's other inclusions.

Amazon SES vs SendGrid vs Resend at the same volume

Emails a monthSES à la carteSES EssentialsSES ProSendGridResend
50,000$5$8$116$19.95$20
100,000$10$16$127$34.95$35
2,500,000$250$400$655$1,099$1,150

SES prices don't include attachments, and the SendGrid and Resend figures are from the lowest plan that covers each volume, using the prices in our SendGrid pricing and Resend pricing breakdowns (read October 20, 2026). At 50,000 emails the saving is about $12 a month, or $144 a year. At 2,500,000 it's $699 a month on Essentials, or $8,388 a year, and that's a real line item.

The break isn't at a specific email count so much as a question of who runs it. SES makes sense once sending is big enough to justify it, or when the business already runs on AWS and has someone who works in that console.

A worked bill: 5,000 emails a month

Take a service company with 400 jobs a month, five emails per job and a 3,000-contact newsletter, so 5,000 emails. Say each of the 400 invoices carries a 500 KB PDF. The volumes are our example, not Amazon's.

LineMathResult
Sending, Essentials5,000 × $0.16 / 1,000$0.80
Attachments400 × 0.5 MB = 0.2 GB × $0.12$0.02
Monthly bill$0.82, or $9.84 a year

SendGrid's plan for the same work is $239.40 a year, so SES saves about $230. That's the honest size of the prize at this volume. A few hours of setup uses that up.

The limits that break automations on SES

  • The sandbox. Every new account starts there, separately in each Region. It can only send to verified addresses, with a maximum of 200 messages per 24 hours. A workflow that tests fine with your own email will fail on its first real customer until production access is approved.
  • The bounce line. AWS suggests staying under 2%. At 5% your account goes under review, and at 10% AWS might pause sending. An old CRM export is how automations get there.
  • The complaint line. This one is tight. AWS reviews accounts at 0.1% and might pause them at 0.5%. In a 3,000-person send, 0.1% is three people pressing the spam button.
  • Region-by-region setup. Plan fees, sandbox status and fixed charges all follow the account and Region, so a second Region is a second setup.

Cleaning a list first is cheap. Email validation is $0.01 per address through the API, so checking 3,000 contacts costs $30. Pro includes 2,500 of those checks a month.

Who should not use Amazon SES?

SES's plan table covers sending, deliverability and inbound routing. It doesn't list a drag-and-drop campaign editor. If an owner or office manager writes the newsletter, a marketing tool fits better, even at a higher price per email. Our Brevo pricing page shows what that costs and why contacts drive the bill. SES fits best when software sends the email, not a person.

Who can build email automation on Amazon SES for my business?

SuperDupr, the AI ops shop Justin McKelvey runs, builds that plumbing: production access, domain setup, bounce and complaint handling, and the workflow that decides who gets what. AI workflow automation projects run $10,000 to $25,000, take 2 to 4 weeks and cost $200 to $2,000 a month to run. The first step is a free 30-minute strategy session. We don't resell SES.

Email is one step in a longer chain. Automation platform pricing covers what the tools that trigger those sends cost.
