What an AI agent development company should build for a service business
Most service businesses do not need a general-purpose AI. They need one job taken off a person's desk: answering the phone at 7 p.m., replying to a web lead before a competitor does, chasing an unpaid invoice, or moving a job from the inbox into the schedule. An AI agent is software that does that job on its own, inside your tools, and hands the hard cases to a human.
That is the work SuperDupr does. We build agents in three groups:
- Intake agents that answer calls, website chats and form fills, ask the qualifying questions, and book the appointment. The phone version is our AI voice agent and receptionist build.
- Follow-up agents that reply to new leads within a minute, send reminders, re-book no-shows and nudge quotes that went quiet.
- Operations agents that read invoices and forms, update the CRM or job system, and write the weekly report nobody wants to build by hand.
When several of those jobs need to pass work to each other (the intake agent qualifies a lead, the scheduling agent books it, the follow-up agent confirms it), that becomes a multi-agent system, which we price and scope separately.
How much does AI agent development cost?
These are SuperDupr's published build prices, as of October 2026. Each is a fixed-scope project quoted before work starts.
| The job the agent does | What we call the build | Build price |
|---|---|---|
| Answers the phone, books, routes calls | AI Voice Agents & Receptionists | $5,000 to $10,000 |
| Answers website and text chats, qualifies visitors | AI Chatbots & Conversational AI | $5,000 to $10,000 |
| Books, reminds and reschedules appointments | AI Appointment Scheduling | $5,000 to $10,000 |
| Replies to every new lead and runs the follow-up | AI Lead Generation & Follow-Up | $8,000 to $15,000 |
| Resolves routine support questions, escalates the rest | AI Customer Support Agents | $8,000 to $15,000 |
| Researches prospects and books sales meetings | AI Sales Agents | $8,000 to $15,000 |
| Reads invoices, contracts and forms into your systems | AI Document Processing | $8,000 to $20,000 |
| Runs a back-office process across several tools | AI Workflow Automation | $10,000 to $25,000 |
| Coordinates several agents end to end | Multi-Agent AI Systems | $25,000 to $50,000+ |
After launch, ongoing support and monitoring runs $200 to $2,000 a month depending on volume. Most AI systems we build go live in 2 to 4 weeks.
Two things set the price inside each range: how many of your tools the agent has to read from and write to, and how much it is allowed to do without a person approving it. An agent that drafts a reply sits at the bottom of a range. One that sends the reply, books the slot and updates the job sits at the top. For the whole market, including DIY and monthly SaaS agents, our guide to how much an AI agent costs lays out every tier side by side.
What you pay after launch, besides us
The build price is not the whole bill. Agents run on usage-priced services (a phone carrier, a voice platform, an AI model), and those bills stay in your business's name at the vendors' own rates. Here is one real example from our own pricing research, using rates read on October 7, 2026: an AI receptionist taking 400 calls a month at 3 minutes each comes to about $114 a month for the voice platform, the model and the phone line combined, or 9.5 cents a minute. The line-by-line math is in our ElevenLabs pricing breakdown.
A follow-up or operations agent is usually cheaper to run than a phone agent, because text costs a fraction of voice. The point is to ask any builder for this number before you sign, not after the first invoice.
Who can build an AI agent for my business?
You have three honest options, and the right one depends on the job:
- Build it yourself on a no-code agent builder. Good for one simple workflow if someone on your team likes this kind of work. Our comparison of Lindy vs Relevance AI vs Gumloop covers what each builder is good at and how each one meters usage.
- Buy a finished SaaS agent. Best when an off-the-shelf product already fits most of your process. Do not pay for a custom build of a solved problem.
- Hire an AI agent development company. Best when the agent has to work inside your specific tools and rules, and when you want to own it rather than rent it.
SuperDupr is the third option for owner-led service businesses: home services, construction, legal, healthcare and dental, real estate, accounting, insurance, fitness, auto services and hospitality. We have built our own agent products too, including LocalCall AI, a voice agent platform that answers and books calls for contractors, and Qualifyed, which scores and routes inbound leads. The build is one-time, the system and its accounts belong to your business, and there is no per-seat fee to us for the people who use it.
How an AI agent build works with us
- Free 30-minute strategy session. We pick the one job worth automating first and say plainly if a SaaS tool would do it cheaper.
- Fixed-scope quote. The job, the tools it connects to, what it may do on its own, what goes to a human, and the price.
- Build and test on your real cases. Past calls, real leads, actual invoices. The agent earns its permissions on your data, not on a demo.
- Launch with a human in the loop. Your team reviews the agent's work for the first weeks, then we loosen the approvals that proved safe.
- Support and tuning. The monthly plan covers monitoring, prompt and integration fixes when a vendor changes something, and new jobs as you add them.
Five questions to ask any AI agent development company
Most "top AI agent development companies" lists are written by the companies on them. These questions sort a builder who fits a service business from one who does not:
- What will it cost to run each month at my volume? A good builder can estimate the usage bill per call, chat or document before you sign.
- Whose name are the accounts in? The phone number, the AI provider account and the data should be yours.
- What can the agent do without asking a person? Get the list in writing. Refunds, quotes and cancellations usually should not be on it at first.
- What happens when a tool it depends on changes? Someone has to fix it. Ask who, how fast, and what it costs.
- Can I see it work on my own data before launch? If the answer is a demo on someone else's business, keep looking.
