How much does local SEO cost?

Local SEO costs $1,557 a month on average, according to Ahrefs' poll of 439 SEO providers (read October 18, 2026). Agencies average $1,819 a month and freelancers $1,150, and the most common hourly rate for local SEO work is $75 to $100. Over a year, that is $13,800 for the average freelancer and $21,828 for the average agency.

Those are the numbers most quotes will be measured against. The rest of this page is what the averages hide, what a local retainer should actually cover, and the math a home-service business should run before it signs anything.

Local SEO pricing by who you hire

Every figure below is from the same Ahrefs survey. "Local" means providers who serve local markets rather than clients worldwide.

Who you hireAverage monthly pricePer yearTypical hourly rate
Local SEO, all providers$1,557$18,684$93.89 average; $75 to $100 most common
Local SEO agency$1,819$21,828$75 to $100 most common
Local SEO freelancer$1,150$13,800$75 to $100 most common
SEO consultant (all markets)$3,250$39,000$100 to $150 most common
Any SEO, any market$2,917$35,004$111 average

Providers serving worldwide clients averaged $3,473.74 a month, 123% more than local providers. That gap is why a quote from a national agency can be double the local one for the same town.

What the averages hide

  • The averages lean high. Ahrefs computed them by assuming every respondent charges the top of the price band it picked (a provider who chose "$1,001 to $1,500" counts as $1,500). The real middle is lower: the single most common retainer band is $501 to $1,000 a month, chosen by 20.4% of providers, and 42% charge $250 to $1,000 a month for a very small business with basic needs.
  • In the U.S. and Canada, prices run higher. 79.1% of providers in those two countries charge at least $1,001 a month. If you are comparing quotes from American agencies, the $1,557 average is closer to the floor than the ceiling.
  • Experience costs more. Providers in business two years or less averaged $1,540.52 a month, those with more than two years $2,023.13, and those with 5 to 10 years $3,648.28.
  • Most providers sell a retainer. 78.2% charge a monthly retainer, 48.9% sell fixed projects and 34.8% bill by the hour (many offer more than one). Local providers' average project fee was $5,723.53.

What should a local SEO retainer include?

The price only means something next to the work list. For a home-service business, the jobs that move rankings in Google's map results and get you named by ChatGPT and Google's AI answers are the same short list. We tested who AI names for plumbers, roofers and HVAC companies in five cities each, and the businesses named had these in common:

  • A complete, active Google Business Profile: the right primary category, every service listed, hours, photos, and posts that show the business is open.
  • Listings on the sites the AI reads: in the plumber test, ConsumerAffairs and Best Pros in Town were read in all five cities. Directory and best-of listings are where most first mentions came from.
  • A page per money job and per town on your own site: "water heater replacement in Austin" gets answered from company pages that say exactly that, not from home pages.
  • Recent reviews that name the job and the town, and a site that loads fast and says which towns you serve.
  • A monthly report showing which of those changed and whether you show up for the questions customers ask.

If a quote is mostly "content" and "backlinks" with none of the above named, ask what it covers before comparing prices. If you are not showing up at all, start with why your business is not showing up on Google; the fix is often free.

The math: what local SEO has to earn back

A retainer is only cheap or expensive against the profit of the jobs it brings in. Divide the monthly price by the gross profit on one job to see how many new jobs a month it needs:

Monthly priceJobs needed at $250 profit eachAt $500 profitAt $1,500 profit
$297 (SuperDupr Local AI Search)1.20.60.2
$1,150 (average local freelancer)4.62.30.8
$1,557 (average local provider)6.23.11.0
$1,819 (average local agency)7.33.61.2

A roofer whose replacement jobs clear $1,500 each needs about one extra job a month to cover even the average agency. A drain-cleaning business at $250 a job needs six or more, every month, before the retainer pays for itself. Use your own numbers: the profit on a job, not the ticket price.

Hourly math works the same way. At the most common local rate of $75 to $100 an hour, $1,557 buys roughly 16 to 21 hours a month, and $297 buys 3 to 4. Ask any provider how many hours your retainer covers and what gets done in them.

Who can do local SEO for you?

Three honest options. Do it yourself: the work list above needs no agency, and an office manager with a free afternoon a week can get through most of it. Hire a local freelancer or agency if you want someone accountable for rankings, and budget the $1,150 to $1,819 a month the survey shows. Or pay for the AI-search slice only.

Full disclosure: this page was written by SuperDupr, the company Justin McKelvey runs, and we sell that last option. Local AI Search is $297 a month, no setup fee, month-to-month: we keep your Google Business Profile, listings, and service and town pages current, and every month we report whether ChatGPT and Google's AI recommend you. If your site works, you keep it; if you have none, we build one on your domain for the same price. It is not a full SEO retainer: it does not include paid ads or link building. For that, our SEO and digital marketing work runs $2,000 to $5,000 a month. Before you pay anyone, run the free AI Visibility Check to see which businesses AI names in your town right now.
