SEO for Roofers in 2026: Does AI Recommend You? We Asked It in 5 Cities

Roofing SEO now has to win an AI answer, not just a map pack. On October 13, 2026 we asked AI for the best roofers in Austin, Dallas, Houston, Denver and Atlanta: it read roofing ranking sites (Expertise.com, The Roofing Brief, Best Pick Reports), the BBB and roofers' own websites, and named 20 companies. Here is what it read and the fix list in order.

Does AI recommend roofers the same way Google ranks them?

No. On October 13, 2026 we asked an AI search engine for "the best roofers" in Austin, Dallas, Houston, Denver and Atlanta. It named 20 roofing companies across the five cities, and to decide, it read three kinds of pages: roofing review and ranking sites (Expertise.com in 4 of 5 cities, The Roofing Brief, Best Pick Reports, Thumbtack and EcoWatch in 3 each), the BBB, and roofers' own websites. In 4 of the 5 cities, at least one roofer it named was a company whose own website it had just read.

That last point is the one most roofing SEO advice misses. Ranking in the map pack still matters, but an AI answer is a short list, usually four to six names, and the AI builds it from what it can read about you in the moment. A roofer with a thin website and a great review count can be left off a list it would have topped.

What we found when we asked AI for the best roofers in 5 cities

Method: one question per city, "best roofers in [city], [state]", sent on October 13, 2026 to Perplexity's Sonar model with live web search, which returns the sources it read. The names below are the first four companies the answer highlighted. AI answers change from run to run, so treat this as a snapshot, not a ranking.

CityRoofers the AI named firstThird-party sites it readRoofer websites it read
Austin, TXKidd Roofing, JASB Roofing, LOA Construction, Austin Area RoofersThe Roofing Brief, Best Pick Reports, Expertise.com, Thumbtack, EcoWatch, NRCA, a local newsletter2 (one of them a named roofer)
Dallas, TXKPost Roofing & Waterproofing, TopCraft Roofing, M&I Construction Services, New Elite RoofBest Pick Reports, BBB, Angi, Today's Homeowner, Three Best Rated, Best Pros in Town3 (one of them a named roofer)
Houston, TXInnpreccon Roofing, Southwestern Roofing, Urena Roofing & Contractor, Elite RoofingThe Roofing Brief, Best Pick Reports, Expertise.com, Thumbtack, EcoWatch, Best Pros in Town, GAF2
Denver, COLifetime Roof & Solar, Elite Roofing & Solar, Red Diamond Roofing, Premier Roofing CompanyThe Roofing Brief, Expertise.com, Thumbtack, BBB, HomeMatchup2 (one of them a named roofer)
Atlanta, GAMPC Roofing & Construction, Academy Roofing, LB Roofing & Construction, Findlay RoofingGeorgia Roofing Roster, Expertise.com, BBB, EcoWatch, Forbes, Trustdale3 (one of them a named roofer)

Three patterns stand out for roofing specifically:

  • Roofing has its own ranking sites, and AI reads them. The Roofing Brief and Best Pick Reports are roofing or home-service lists most homeowners never visit directly. They showed up in 3 of 5 cities each. A general SEO checklist that stops at Yelp will not get you on them.
  • Manufacturers and trade bodies count as sources. GAF's site was read in Houston and the National Roofing Contractors Association's in Austin. Certified-installer directories are one of the few places a roofer's name sits next to a manufacturer's.
  • The BBB is read in roofing more than in most trades. Storm-season door knockers have made homeowners, and the AI that answers them, look for proof a company is established. Three of five answers pulled the BBB.

Why does AI skip roofers with great reviews?

Reviews are necessary, not sufficient. The AI has to connect three facts before it names you: that you are a roofer, that you work in the city it was asked about, and that other sites agree you are good. Roofers get skipped when one link is missing, most often because:

  • The website says "roofing" once and never names the services (repair, replacement, storm and hail damage, insurance claims, metal, tile) or the suburbs served, so the AI cannot match you to "best roofer in Round Rock".
  • The Google Business Profile lists a primary category other than Roofing contractor, or the business name and phone differ between Google, the BBB and the directories.
  • The company is absent from the roofing-specific lists above, so the only outside proof is star ratings.

We did not compare review counts between named and unnamed roofers in this run. The free check does that for your city: it shows who was named and how their reviews stack up against yours.

Roofing SEO fix list, in order

  1. Google Business Profile category. Primary: Roofing contractor. Add secondaries only for work you actually sell (for example a gutter or siding category). List each service with a sentence about it, and post storm-response updates after hail events while people are searching.
  2. One page per service and per town. Separate pages for roof repair, roof replacement, storm and hail damage, and insurance claim help, plus a page per suburb you serve with real jobs from that suburb. This is the page AI quotes when it names a roofer for a specific town.
  3. Get on the roofing lists. Claim or apply to Expertise.com, Best Pick Reports (it is vetted, so expect a review process), Thumbtack and your local roofing roster or association list. Keep the name, address and phone identical everywhere.
  4. Manufacturer certification, published. If you hold a GAF, Owens Corning or CertainTeed credential, make sure you appear in that manufacturer's contractor locator and say so on your site with the exact program name.
  5. BBB profile. Accredited or not, make sure the profile exists, matches your Google listing and has your license and insurance details. Texas does not license roofing contractors at the state level, so this kind of outside proof carries more weight there.
  6. Schema markup. schema.org has a RoofingContractor type. Use it on your home and town pages with your service area, phone and review rating.
  7. A review from every finished job. Ask the day the crew finishes, with a link, and ask the customer to mention the job and the town. "New roof in Pflugerville after hail" helps the AI more than "great job".

What is it worth to a roofer to be on the AI list?

Here is the arithmetic the free check runs, with an example city of 2,000 roofing searches a month (the check pulls the real number for yours):

  • 15% to 20% of those searchers get an AI answer that names companies, and 5% to 10% of them contact a named company. That is 15 to 40 contacts a month.
  • At a 40% close rate that is 6 to 16 jobs, split between, say, five named roofers plus you: 1 to 2.7 jobs a month for each.
  • At Angi's average roof repair of $1,174, the figure the check uses, that is about $1,200 to $3,100 a month. If those jobs were replacements, at Fixr's 2026 average of $10,000, it is $10,000 to $26,700 a month.

Every input is an assumption you can change. The point is the shape: for roofers one replacement a month pays for a year of this work.
