Slack Pricing in 2026: Pro vs Business+, Fair Billing, and the Limits on AI Workflows

As of October 11, 2026, Slack Pro costs $7.25 per user a month billed annually ($8.75 monthly), Business+ costs $15 ($18 monthly) and Enterprise+ is listed at $45 billed annually, and Slack bills only active members. AI steps in Workflow Builder start on Business+, and Slack caps a message-triggered AI step at 10 runs an hour per workflow.

How much does Slack cost? The short answer

As of October 11, 2026, Slack Pro costs $7.25 per user a month billed annually or $8.75 billed monthly, Business+ costs $15 billed annually or $18 monthly, and Enterprise+ is listed at $45 per user a month billed annually. The Free plan keeps 90 days of message history and allows up to 10 apps. Slack only bills members who are actively using it, and the AI steps that make Slack workflows useful start on Business+, not Pro.

Prices and plan features come from Slack's pricing page, the billing rules from Slack's Fair Billing Policy help article, and the automation limits from Slack's developer documentation on rate limits, all read October 11, 2026. Slack shows the monthly price first; we quote both.

Pro and Business+ also include custom workflow steps (developer-built steps that call your own systems), deployment of custom functions on Slack's infrastructure at no extra cost, and AI assistant apps that embed third-party agents. Business+ adds exports of all messages, including private channels and DMs, data residency and SCIM provisioning. Enterprise+ adds enterprise search across connected apps, multiple workspaces, audit logs, legal holds, HIPAA support and data loss prevention. We read the feature grid column by column; if a feature matters to your decision, confirm it on Slack's page for your plan.

The Free plan's two automation blockers

Free looks fine for a small team until you connect software to it. Two limits get in the way:

  • 10 apps. A typical small business wires up Google Drive, a calendar, a CRM, a help desk, an automation platform and an AI assistant in the first month. That is six of ten before anyone adds a niche tool.
  • 90 days of history. Messages older than 90 days are hidden from search, and Slack's compliance table says the free plan deletes data after one year. A bot that answers "what did we tell this customer in the spring?" has nothing to read.

Worked example: 25 people on Pro vs Business+

A 25-person company runs customer requests through a shared Slack channel and wants an AI step to summarize each request and route it to the right person. Here is what each plan costs and where the automation limits land.

25 usersProBusiness+
Billed annually$181.25 a month ($2,175 a year)$375 a month ($4,500 a year)
Billed monthly$218.75 a month ($2,625 a year)$450 a month ($5,400 a year)
AI step in the request workflowNot availableAvailable, within Slack's rate limits
Conditional routing (if billing, send to billing)Not availableAvailable

Moving from Pro to Business+ on annual billing costs this team $2,325 a year. What it buys, for automation, is the AI step and conditional branching inside Workflow Builder. Now the limit most Slack pricing pages leave out. Slack's developer docs cap the AI Generate step at 100 requests per day per workflow, and at 10 requests per hour per workflow when the workflow is triggered by a message. Say the channel gets 60 requests a day and 18 of them land in the busiest hour, Monday morning:

  • Daily: 60 of 100 allowed. Fits.
  • Peak hour: 18 against a limit of 10. Eight requests go past the documented limit in that hour, which is the hour you most need the triage.

So a message-triggered AI workflow on Business+ suits a channel that gets a steady trickle, not one with a Monday rush. The usual fixes are to split the work across two workflows (each has its own hourly limit), to batch requests on a schedule, or to run the AI step outside Slack in your own service and post the result back, which Slack's general posting limit of about one message per second per channel easily absorbs.

How Slack's Fair Billing Policy changes the math

Slack bills paid plans for active members only. When a paid member becomes inactive, Slack detects it and adds a prorated credit to your account for the unused time; when they come back, it charges the prorated cost for the rest of the period. Slack's own example: a member added with 20 days left in a 30-day month on Pro monthly costs ($8.75 / 30) x 20 = $5.83.

For a company with seasonal staff or contractors, that is real money. If 5 of the 25 users above go inactive for 6 months a year on Business+ annual, the credits come to about 5 x $15 x 6 = $450 a year. Two catches: credits apply to future Slack charges only, with no cash value, and they expire if you cancel your paid plan. If everyone goes inactive, Slack still bills a minimum of one member.

The intro offer is narrower than it looks: 50% off Pro or Business+ for 3 months applies only to monthly plans bought online within the first 7 days of creating the team, and not to annual plans or Enterprise+.

Slack's limits for bots, webhooks and integrations

Every Slack plan gets the same API rate limit tiers, so paying more does not buy API speed. The limits a small business build is most likely to meet:

Where it appliesDocumented limit
Workflow webhook triggers (forms, outside apps starting a workflow)10 per minute
Workflow event triggers10,000 per hour
AI Generate step100 per day per workflow; 10 per hour if message-triggered
AI summary step150 per minute per team; 1 per hour per workflow, bursts of 10
Posting messages and incoming webhooksAbout 1 per second per channel, short bursts allowed
Events API deliveries to your app30,000 per workspace per app per hour
Web API methodsTier 1 to Tier 4: 1+ to 100+ per minute per method

The webhook trigger limit is the one that catches lead intake. A promo email that brings 50 form fills in one minute sends 50 webhooks at a workflow that accepts 10 a minute. The fix is to send the form to your own endpoint or an automation platform first and let it queue the posts into Slack. If you are choosing that middle layer, our n8n vs Make vs Zapier comparison prices the same workflow on all three. Slack also changed limits on reading message history for newly created, commercially distributed apps that are not in the Slack Marketplace, effective May 29, 2025; apps you build for your own workspace are not affected.

Where Slack fits in an automated business

Slack is where people see the work, not where the work should live. Customer records belong in a CRM, jobs in a project or field service tool, documents in a wiki such as Notion, and Slack carries the alerts, approvals and summaries between them. Notion is the most common pairing we see for small teams, and its API has a speed limit of its own; our Notion pricing breakdown covers it. When you price the stack, price it as a whole: the chat tool, the database and the connections between them are all line items in your business process automation software budget.

Who can build a Slack bot or Slack workflow automation for a small business?

Workflow Builder is the right place to start for simple approvals, forms and reminders, and on Business+ it can call an AI step. A builder is worth it when the bot has to know your business: answer from your own documents, look up an order or a job in another system, route a request by account or service area, and post back without hitting the rate limits above. SuperDupr builds those systems; we do not resell Slack plans. A Slack bot that answers questions from your own data is one of our AI chatbots builds, published at $5,000 to $10,000, and when it also moves work between tools it becomes an AI workflow automation project at $10,000 to $25,000. Most AI systems go live in 2 to 4 weeks, with ongoing support at $200 to $2,000 a month depending on volume. The first step is a free 30-minute strategy session.
