Is Notion Free? The Free Plan's 1,000-Block Limit and When a Team Has to Pay (2026)

Yes, Notion has a $0 Free plan, unlimited for one person. With 2 or more people it gets 1,000 blocks for life, and deleting content doesn't help. What Free includes, how fast an automation uses up the blocks, and what Plus costs.

Is Notion free? The short answer

Yes, as of November 4, 2026, Notion has a Free plan at $0, and for one person it has no block limit. Add a second person and the Free workspace gets 1,000 blocks in total, counted from the day you signed up. Deleting content doesn't give any back. Free also caps file uploads at 5 MB, page history at 7 days and guests at 10, and its automations are buttons only. Plus costs $10 per member a month billed yearly and removes the block cap.

Plan details come from Notion's pricing page, its help center articles on block usage and plan downgrades, and its developer documentation, all read November 4, 2026.

Two lines in that table surprise people. Notion AI isn't really in Plus either: the Notion Agent, AI meeting notes and enterprise search are a trial on both, and fully included from Business at $20. And the API speed is the same on Free and Plus. Notion's developer docs give Business and Enterprise 600 requests a minute per connection and every other plan 180. A solo owner on Free can connect Notion to other software at the same speed as a paid Plus team.

How the 1,000-block limit actually works

Notion's help center counts every piece of content as a block: a line of text, a table row, an image, a to-do. Four rules decide when a Free workspace runs out:

  • It only applies with 2 or more people. People added to a Free workspace join as workspace owners, and once there's more than one owner, the 1,000-block limit applies.
  • The count never goes down. Notion counts blocks created since signup. Deleting pages or emptying the trash doesn't free any.
  • You keep what you have. At 1,000 you can still read and edit existing content, but you can't add new blocks. Notion gives a three-day grace period when you hit the limit.
  • Teamspaces don't count, so archiving one doesn't help either.

Notion's own way out, short of paying, is to remove members until there's one, then add the others as guests. A one-member workspace has unlimited blocks, and Free allows 10 guests. The trade-off is that guests only see the pages they're invited to, not your teamspaces.

How fast an automation burns through 1,000 blocks

This is where Free breaks for a business, and it's not the people typing. It's the integrations. Every page an automation creates through the API is new content that counts.

Take a two-person cleaning company on a Free workspace with two owners. A website form sends each new inquiry into a Notion leads database. Each lead becomes a page with the customer's message, an AI summary heading and paragraph, and two follow-up to-dos. That's about 6 blocks a lead, counting the page itself.

  • 1,000 blocks ÷ 6 = about 166 leads, total, ever.
  • At 10 inquiries a business day, the workspace hits the cap in about 17 working days, under a month.
  • After that, the form handler can't create new pages, and the three-day grace period is the warning.

Deleting old leads doesn't reset anything, because the count is lifetime. For a team that writes to Notion automatically, the Free plan is a trial with a meter, not a plan. Moving both owners to Plus costs $20 a month billed yearly, $240 a year. Business, the plan with included AI and 600 API requests a minute, is $40 a month for the two, $480 a year.

What else Free can't do for automations

  • No custom database automations. Free gets buttons. Rules that set a status, assign a person or create a page when something changes start on Plus. Notion's downgrade guide says automations built on a paid plan become view-only if you drop to Free.
  • No Custom Agents. The same guide says existing Custom Agents are switched off on a downgrade to Free or Plus, which puts them on Business and up. They also draw on Notion credits at $10 per 1,000.
  • Basic forms only. Free forms carry Notion branding and skip conditional logic. If intake forms are the job, our Typeform pricing breakdown shows how a dedicated form tool prices by monthly responses.
  • 7 days of page history. If an integration overwrites a page with bad data on Monday, the version from the week before is gone by next Tuesday.

Who gets Notion Plus for free?

Students and educators. Notion's pricing FAQ says the Plus plan with a 1-member limit is free with a school email address, which adds more guests, longer version history and larger uploads. It's a solo plan, so it doesn't help a team.

For everyone else, the paid ladder is $10 a member on Plus, $20 on Business and custom pricing on Enterprise, all billed yearly. Guests are free on every plan. Our Notion pricing breakdown covers the paid plans, the API limits on an 8-person team, and what Notion AI credits cost.

Notion Free or another free tool as an automation database?

If you picked Notion as the database behind a lead or job workflow, compare it with tools built as databases first. Airtable's free plan meters by records and automation runs instead of lifetime blocks, which is easier to plan around. Our Airtable pricing page runs a 12-person team through those meters. When the real question is which tool should sit at the center of your operations, our guide to business process automation software compares the options by what each one costs to connect.

Who can build Notion automations without hitting the Free plan wall?

Use Free while it's one person, or a small team typing by hand. Once software writes into the workspace, budget for Plus at least and design the integration to write fewer, denser pages. SuperDupr, the AI ops shop Justin McKelvey runs, builds those intake, follow-up and AI-summary workflows on Notion and the tools around it. We don't resell Notion seats. That work is an AI workflow automation project for us, published at $10,000 to $25,000. Most AI systems go live in 2 to 4 weeks, with support at $200 to $2,000 a month depending on volume. The first step is a free 30-minute strategy session, where we'll tell you if a Notion button already covers the job.
