Twilio Alternatives 2026: Telnyx, Plivo, Vonage, Bandwidth and Sinch Priced on One AI Receptionist Month
As of October 25, 2026, every major Twilio alternative receives a local call for less than Twilio's $0.0085 a minute: Vonage from $0.00485, Telnyx from $0.0052, Plivo and Bandwidth $0.0055, Sinch $0.008. On a 400-call AI receptionist month the phone side runs about $9 to $15 on the alternatives against about $18 on Twilio, so choose on platform support and number ownership, not the rate card.
What are the best Twilio alternatives? The short answer
As of October 25, 2026, the Twilio alternatives that publish self-serve US prices are Telnyx, Plivo, Vonage and Bandwidth, with Sinch publishing worked examples. All of them receive a local call for less than Twilio's $0.0085 a minute, from about $0.0049 on Vonage to $0.008 on Sinch. On one real workload, an AI receptionist taking 400 calls a month, the phone side runs about $9 to $15 on the alternatives against about $18 on Twilio. The gap is under $10 a month, so pick on what your voice platform supports, not on the rate card.
Every rate below comes from each carrier's own pricing page, read on the date shown in the Sources list at the end. Carrier prices change often and some are "from" prices, so check the live page before you sign a budget.
Twilio alternatives, priced side by side
These are the US voice lines a phone or AI voice build actually uses: a local number, receiving a call, calling out (to transfer a caller to a person), recording, and streaming live call audio to an AI.
| Carrier | Local number | Receive a local call | Make a US call | Recording | Stream audio to your AI | Text on a local number |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Twilio | $1.15/mo | $0.0085/min | $0.014/min | $0.0025/min + $0.0005 storage | $0.0044/min | $0.0083 + carrier fees |
| Telnyx | $1.00/mo (+$0.10 for texting) | from $0.0052/min | from $0.007/min | $0.002/min | $0.0035/min | $0.004 + carrier fees |
| Plivo | $0.50/mo | $0.0055/min | $0.0115/min | $0 (storage free 90 days) | Included | $0.0077 + carrier fees |
| Vonage | Not on the voice page | from $0.00485/min | from $0.00849/min | Not on the voice page | $0.00492/min (websocket call) | Not read |
| Bandwidth | Quote only | $0.0055/min | $0.0100/min | $0.0020/min | $0.004/min (two-way) | $0.004 (10DLC) |
| Sinch | $0.80/mo + $0.80 setup | $0.008/min | $0.01/min | $0.002/min | Not priced in our read | Not read |
Two notes on how to read this. Bandwidth bills calls in 6-second increments and says full pricing is on request, so its page is a starting point, not a quote. Sinch's live rate table rendered as placeholders when we read it, so its figures come from the worked examples in Sinch's own pricing FAQ.

One workload on every carrier: an AI receptionist taking 400 calls a month
Rate cards do not compare until you put a month through them. This is the same workload our Twilio pricing and Telnyx breakdowns use: a service business whose AI receptionist answers 400 calls a month on one local number, 3 minutes each (1,200 inbound minutes). A quarter of callers get put through to the owner's cell for about 2 minutes (200 outbound minutes), and every call is recorded.
| Carrier | Math (number + inbound + outbound + recording) | Phone side a month | Plus streaming 1,200 min to your AI |
|---|---|---|---|
| Twilio | $1.15 + 1,200 x $0.0085 + 200 x $0.014 + 1,200 x $0.003 | about $17.75 | +$5.28 |
| Sinch | $0.80 + 1,200 x $0.008 + 200 x $0.01 + 1,200 x $0.002 | about $14.80 (+$0.80 once) | Not priced |
| Telnyx | $1.00 + 1,200 x $0.0052 + 200 x $0.007 + 1,200 x $0.002 | about $11.05 | +$4.20 |
| Bandwidth | 1,200 x $0.0055 + 200 x $0.010 + 1,200 x $0.002, number not published | about $11.00 + the number | +$4.80 |
| Plivo | $0.50 + 1,200 x $0.0055 + 200 x $0.0115 + $0 recording | about $9.40 | $0, included |
| Vonage | 1,200 x $0.00485 + 200 x $0.00849, number and recording not on the page | about $7.50 + number and recording | +$5.90 |
With streaming added, which is how most custom AI receptionists hear the caller, Plivo comes out cheapest at about $9.40, because its page lists audio streaming and noise cancellation as included. Twilio lands at about $23. Add one appointment text per caller and the order holds: 400 texts are about $3.32 on Twilio, $3.08 on Plivo and $1.60 on Telnyx or Bandwidth, each before carrier fees of roughly $1.40 to $2.00 (Plivo publishes $0.0035 to AT&T, $0.0045 to T-Mobile and $0.005 to Verizon per outbound text).
Now put that next to the AI. The same 1,200 minutes on a voice AI platform cost about $111 to $184 a month in our voice AI pricing comparison. Switching carriers saves $5 to $14 of that. It is worth doing on a new build. It is rarely worth rebuilding a working one for.
What actually decides which Twilio alternative to use
- Does your voice platform support it? Vapi's docs, read October 25, 2026, list native number imports for Twilio and Telnyx and SIP trunk guides for Plivo and DIDWW. Retell charges nothing for telephony when you bring your own SIP trunk, against $0.015 a minute and $2 a number on its own lines. A carrier your platform does not document is a carrier your builder has to debug.
- Who owns the number. Vapi's free number is inbound only and, per its docs, cannot be ported out because it sits on Vapi's carrier account. A number on your own Twilio, Telnyx or Plivo account stays yours if you change voice platforms. For a business whose phone number is on every truck and review, that matters more than a cent a minute.
- Self-serve or sales. Twilio, Telnyx and Plivo let you sign up and buy a number today. Plivo offers $10 in free credit with no card. Bandwidth leads with "request a quote", and its rates exclude taxes and fees.
- What is included. Plivo includes audio streaming and recording, Telnyx charges $0.002 for recording with free storage, and Twilio charges for both recording and storage. Telnyx charges $0.10 each time its transfer command runs, which at 100 transfers is more than the inbound minutes.
- Texting registration. Every carrier has to register business texting from a local number (10DLC) with the US carriers. The fees are similar everywhere; the paperwork is the same work on any of them.
Which Twilio alternative should a small business pick?
Starting a new AI voice build: Telnyx or Plivo. Both are documented by the main voice platforms, both cost about half of Twilio per inbound minute, and Plivo's included streaming makes it the cheapest line for a custom agent. Our Telnyx pricing breakdown has Telnyx's full rate card, including its own $0.05-a-minute voice agent.
Already on Twilio and it works: stay, unless you are moving thousands of minutes. At 400 calls a month the saving is under $10.
You do not want to build at all: a carrier API is the wrong tool. A business phone app with a built-in AI agent, such as Quo (formerly OpenPhone), prices per user and per AI call instead of per minute; our OpenPhone pricing page runs the numbers for a 4-person office.
High volume or regulated: Bandwidth and Sinch run their own networks and sell through sales teams. Get a quote at your real minutes before comparing.
Who can build an AI phone system on Twilio, Telnyx or Plivo for my business?
A developer who knows one carrier can get a number answering in a day. The longer work is the rest: the agent's script and tools, transfers that reach the right person, texts that clear 10DLC, and writing every call into the CRM or job system your team uses. SuperDupr, the AI ops shop Justin McKelvey runs, builds AI voice agents for service businesses on these carriers. Our published price for a voice agent build is $5,000 to $10,000, with $200 to $2,000 a month ongoing depending on volume, and most AI builds go live in 2 to 4 weeks. The carrier account and number are opened in your business's name, so usage is billed at the carrier's own rates; we do not resell any of them. The first step is a free 30-minute strategy session, booked from that page.

For a new AI voice or phone build in the US, Telnyx or Plivo. Both are documented by the main voice AI platforms (Vapi imports Telnyx numbers and has a Plivo SIP guide), and both receive a local call for about $0.0052 to $0.0055 a minute against Twilio's $0.0085, as of October 25, 2026. Plivo includes audio streaming and recording in its rates, which makes it the cheapest line for a custom AI receptionist.
-
Yes on every voice line a small business uses. On a 400-call, 3-minute AI receptionist month with transfers and recording, the phone side is about $17.75 on Twilio, $11.05 on Telnyx and $9.40 on Plivo, from each carrier's own pricing page. Add streaming the call audio to your AI and it is about $23, $15.25 and $9.40, because Plivo includes streaming.
-
Usually not for a small business that already runs on Twilio. At 400 calls a month the saving is $5 to $14, while the AI platform on top costs about $111 to $184 for the same minutes. Switch on a new build, or when volume reaches thousands of minutes, or when you need a feature like included streaming.

Vapi's docs, read October 25, 2026, list number imports from Twilio and Telnyx and SIP trunk guides for Plivo and DIDWW. Retell charges $0.015 a minute and $2 a number on its own telephony and nothing for telephony when you bring your own SIP trunk. Check the platform's docs before picking a carrier your builder would have to wire by hand.
-
On your own account. Vapi's free number is inbound only, and its docs say it cannot be ported out because it sits on Vapi's carrier account. A number on your own Twilio, Telnyx or Plivo account stays yours if you change voice platforms or builders.
